Friedrichs Ataxia (FA) is a rare, progressive neuromuscular disease which causes a loss of balance, coordination, motor skills,  heart function, a decline of speech and hearing due to a reduced production of a protein called Frataxin.  This is caused by a mutation of the FXN gene. Frataxin works inside of the mitochondria to help produce energy. When your body does not make enough Frataxin, your cells are subjected to oxidative stress and damage.
